Day 3 – Lake Bunyonyi
After breakfast drive through the Kigezi region; well know as the “Switzerland of Africa”, to the magnificent Lake Bunyonyi. This lake is a result of lava flow from one of the Virunga Mountains, which blocked off the Ndego River at present-day Muko to create a natural dam. Dotted with at least 20 small islands and encircled by steep terraced hills, Bunyonyi is a magical spot. Bilharzia is reliably reported to be absent from the lake, as are crocodiles and hippos, which means swimming is very safe. Active travelers are catered for, with kayaks, canoes, and mountain bikes available for hire, and enough potential excursions to keep one busy for days. Bunyonyi translates as ‘place of little birds’, which refers to the prolific weaver colonies along its shores, but larger birds are also represented by the likes of grey-crowned crane and a variety of herons and egrets. It is probably the best place in Africa to see otters – the diurnal spotted-necked otter in particular – with several pairs resident around Rutinda and nearby islands.
Dinner and overnight at Arcadia Cottages (FB)

Day 4: Lake Mburo National park – Game Drive
After breakfast, drive to Lake Mburo national Park. A game drive in this park will reward you with several species not easily observed elsewhere in Uganda. It is the only park in the country to support a population of impala, the handsome antelope for which Kampala is named, and one of only three protected areas countrywide where Burchell’s zebra is resident, the other two being the far less accessible Kidepo and Pian Upe. Other antelope species include topi, bushbuck, common duiker, oribi, Defassa waterbuck and Bohor reedbuck. Warthogs, bushpigs, hippos and buffaloes are also in big numbers. Only two diurnal primates are present in this park: the vervet monkey and the olive baboon. Leopard, side-striped jackal and numerous smaller predators exist in Mburo np.
Some 315 bird species are recorded in Mburo national park. It is the best place in Uganda to see acacia-associated birds such as mosque swallow, black-bellied bustard, bare-faced go-away bird and Rupell’s long-tailed starling. A handful of birds recorded in Mburo np are essentially southern species at the very northern limit of their range, e.g. the southern ground hornbill, black-throated and black-collared barbets, and green-capped eremomela. Of special interest to birders are the swamps, in which six papyrus endemic are present including the striking blue-headed Coucal, the brilliantly colored papyrus Gonolek, and the highly localized white-winged and papyrus yellow warblers, the last recorded no where else in Uganda.
In the afternoon, transfer to Kampala en route enjoying your lunch in Lyantonde and making a stop-over at the Equator to buy yourself beautiful handicrafts and taking photographs. Arrive in Kampala in the evening and retire to your hotel.
