Why is gorilla trekking activity very expensive?
There are very few gorilla groups in any of the 3 countries, namely, Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo yet a great number of visitors would love to visit them in a lifetime. There must be in place efforts to minimize human impact on these critically endangered mountain gorillas. As such the cost of seeing the gorillas must be hiked to discourage big numbers of visitors.
The justification of the high cost of the gorilla permit are here below:-
- Conservation and protection efforts include research and monitoring the gorilla movements. The park authority must hire staff to do this. The staff include veterinarians, research personnel and park rangers among others.
- The mountain gorillas are critically endangered thus limiting the number of visitors so as to minimize the human impact. To reduce these numbers the best way to do it is to hike the fees.
- Some gorilla families such as Sabinyo which is the most challenging group to track requires specialized porters and game rangers which raises their cost.
