Detailed 6 Days Uganda Safari
Day 1: Kampala to Lake Mburo National Park
Your 6 days Uganda safari begins with a morning departure from Kampala or Entebbe. The drive to Lake Mburo National Park takes about 4 to 5 hours. The route passes through Uganda’s countryside, small towns and farming communities. A stop at the Equator crossing in Kayabwe provides an opportunity to take photographs and learn about the geographical significance of the equator. Continue towards the park with a possible stop at Igongo Cultural Centre. This centre introduces visitors to the traditions, food and history of the Ankole people.
Arrive at Lake Mburo in the afternoon and enjoy a boat cruise. The boat trip takes place on Lake Mburo and offers views of hippos, crocodiles and water birds. You may see African fish eagles, kingfishers and herons along the shoreline. If time allows you can also visit Rubanga Forest. It is a small forest inside the park and provides opportunities for bird watching and spotting monkeys.
Lake Mburo National Park is located in western Uganda, about 240 kilometres from Kampala. It is the closest savannah park to the capital and covers about 370 square kilometres. The park is known for its large population of zebras, impalas, elands, buffaloes, giraffes and antelopes. It is also one of the few places in Uganda where visitors can see zebras and enjoy walking safaris. Lake Mburo contains several lakes surrounded by wetlands and acacia woodland. These habitats support many bird species including the rare African finfoot. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight. Day 2: Lake Mburo to Kibale Forest National park
Wake up early for a morning game drive before leaving Lake Mburo. The cool morning hours provide the best opportunity to see wildlife. Search for zebras, giraffes, impalas, buffaloes, waterbucks and Uganda kobs. After the game drive, begin the journey to Kibale Forest National Park via Mbarara, Rushere, Ibanda and Fortportal route. The drive takes about 3 to 5 hours depending on your exit gate. The route offers views of farms, hills and tea plantations. A good stop along the way is the Ndali-Kasenda Crater Lakes area near Fort Portal. These volcanic lakes are surrounded by green hills and provide beautiful scenery. Arrive at your lodge in the evening.
Kibale Forest National Park is located near Fort Portal in western Uganda. The park protects one of Africa’s tropical forests and is famous for chimpanzee tracking. Kibale has one of the highest concentrations of primates in Africa. Besides chimpanzees, visitors can see red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, olive colobus monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabeys. Accommodation options include Kyaninga Lodge (luxury), Turaco Treetops (mid-range) and Chimpanzee Forest Guesthouse (budget).
Day 3: Chimpanzee tracking and transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park
After morning breakfast, go for briefing at Kanyanchu park headquaters. This can take you half a day. There are primates in the area like the golden monkey, L’Hoest monkey, baboons, white and black Colobus monkeys, grey checked mangabey, red Colobus, blue monkeys and pottos. Other animals involve forest elephants unique from the common type, giant forest hogs and a striking tree species. Later take a guided nature walk to Bigodi swamp sanctuary, a good site for birders. The Great Blue Turaco and Papyrus Gonolek can easily be marked among the other bird 137 species. There is also an array of butterfly species.
Enjoy your lunch and later transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The journey takes about 2 to 3 hours. Along the way, stop at the Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru caves near Fort Portal. These natural limestone formations are linked to local legends and cultural stories. Arrive at Queen Elizabeth National Park in the evening.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Uganda’s most popular wildlife destinations. It covers about 1,978 square kilometres and lies between Lake Edward and Lake George. The park has diverse habitats including savannah plains, forests, wetlands and volcanic crater areas. It supports elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, hippos and many bird species. The Kazinga Channel boat cruise offers close views of hippos, crocodiles, elephants and water birds.
Day 4: Game drive and afternoon boat in Queen Elizabeth National Park
Begin the morning with a game drive in the Kasenyi Plains. This area is known for large numbers of Uganda kobs which attract predators such as lions. Look for elephants, buffaloes, warthogs, antelopes and if lucky, leopards. After lunch, enjoy a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel. The channel connects Lake Edward and Lake George and provides one of the best game viewing experiences in Uganda.
Large groups of hippos rest in the water while crocodiles relax along the banks. Elephants and buffaloes often come close to drink. Birds which can be spotted include pelicans, kingfishers, herons and African fish eagles. For another optional experience, visit the Katwe Salt Lake community. Local guides explain traditional salt extraction methods that have supported communities for many years. Return to your lodge. Day 5: Game drive in Ishasha and transfer to Bwindi
Bwindi Gorillas
After breakfast, drive south through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The Ishasha area is famous for its tree-climbing lions. These lions often rest on large fig trees during the day. During the drive, look for elephants, buffaloes, topis, pumba, Uganda kobs and monkeys. Continue towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey takes about 3 to 4 hours depending on the sector of Bwindi. The road passes through the Kigezi Highlands which is known for steep hills and terraced farms.
A hidden stop along the way is the Kihihi or Rubuguri community areas where visitors can interact with local people and experience rural life. Arrive at your lodge. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in southwestern Uganda along the Albertine Rift Valley. It protects an ancient rainforest and is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The park is also rich in biodiversity with many bird species, butterflies, plants and other primates. Gorilla trekking is the main activity but visitors can also enjoy forest walks and cultural experiences.
Day 6: Gorilla tracking and transfer to Kigali International Airport
In the morning head to the park headquarters for gorilla trekking. Rangers provide a briefing before assigning visitors to a habituated gorilla family. The trek may take between 2 and 7 hours depending on the gorillas’ location. Bwindi’s steep terrain and thick forest make every trek different.
With finding the gorillas, spend one hour observing their behaviour. Watch the silverback protect the family while young gorillas play nearby. After trekking, begin the transfer to Kigali International Airport. The journey takes about 4 to 6 hours depending on the border crossing and traffic. Along the way, stop at viewpoints overlooking the Virunga Mountains and the Kigezi Highlands. Your guide will drop you at Kigali International Airport for your departure flight.
