Activities offered by Paraa Safari Lodge

Game drives

Game drives take place mainly in the northern sector of Murchison Falls National Park. Visitors travel in a safari vehicle with a trained guide. The guide follows established tracks while looking for wildlife. Morning drives are useful for finding animals during the cooler hours. Afternoon drives provide another opportunity to explore the savannah. Common sightings include elephants, buffaloes, Rothschild’s giraffes, Uganda kobs and Jackson’s hartebeests. Lions and leopards are also present, although sightings vary.

Nile boat cruise

Boat cruises follow the Victoria Nile towards the base of Murchison Falls. The journey normally takes several hours, depending on the route and water conditions. Hippos and crocodiles are common along the river. Elephants, buffaloes and waterbuck may also appear near the shoreline. The cruise also provides opportunities for bird watching.

Visit to the Top of Murchison Falls

Visitors can drive to the top of the falls as part of their safari. Here, the Nile passes through a narrow gorge before dropping downstream. A short walk around the viewpoints allows visitors to see the water from different angles. The visit can be combined with a game drive or transfer between the lodge and other park areas.

Bird watching

Bird watching can be included during game drives and river activities. The park contains many habitats, including savannah, woodland, wetlands and riverine vegetation. Guides help visitors identify birds by their calls, colours and behaviour. Some of the birds that can be spotted include Shoebill Stork, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Goliath Heron, Red-throated and Northern Carmine Bee-eaters and Grey Crowned Crane

Fishing

Sport fishing is available in designated sections of the Nile. The activity normally requires prior arrangements and follows park regulations. Visitors fish from the riverbank or an appropriate boat, depending on the selected area.

Community and conservation

Tourism around Murchison Falls supports employment and other services in communities near the park. Visitors can contribute by using local guides and purchasing locally made crafts.

The lodge’s location also means that responsible wildlife tourism forms part of the wider conservation economy. Guests should follow Uganda Wildlife Authority regulations during game drives, boat trips and other park activities.
