Activities offered by Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge

Gorilla trekking

Gorilla trekking is the lodge’s main activity. Guests leave early for the Nkuringo trekking briefing. Rangers explain the rules before visitors enter the forest. The trek involves walking down or up steep forest slopes depending on where the gorilla family is located. Because Nkuringo is a mountainous area, visitors should prepare for a physically demanding walk.

Forest walks

Guided forest walks allow visitors to explore parts of Bwindi Impenetrable forest without undertaking a gorilla trek. The guide explains plants, birds and forest ecology along the trail. The walks can be arranged at different lengths depending on the visitor’s available time.

Lake Mutanda canoeing

The lodge can arrange canoeing on Lake Mutanda near Kisoro. Visitors travel across the lake in traditional-style canoes while viewing the surrounding volcanic landscape. The activity is quieter than a motorised boat trip and can be combined with a village visit.

Community walks

Community walks take visitors through villages around Nkuringo. Visitors can see farming activities, meet residents and learn about local livelihoods. Some experiences include visits to craft makers, farmers and other community projects.

Cultural experiences

Cultural activities can include storytelling, music, traditional crafts and interaction with local residents. The experience is arranged as a guided community visit rather than a wildlife activity.

Bird watching

Birding takes place around the forest edge and surrounding vegetation. A guide helps visitors identify forest birds by sight and sound. Early morning walks are suitable because bird activity is generally higher. Some of the birds that can be spotted include African Green Broadbill, Rwenzori Turaco, Shelley’s Crimsonwing, Short-tailed Warbler, Archer’s Robin-chat, Mountain Masked Apalis among others.

Hiking and viewpoints

The highland location provides opportunities for longer walks and ridge hikes. One notable viewpoint is known as Top of the World where visitors can look across the surrounding hills and forest. These hikes can be arranged according to fitness and weather conditions.

Community and conservation

Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge works with the Gorilla Junction Foundation which supports community development and conservation projects. The projects include education support, skills development, beekeeping, tailoring, crafts, coffee and tea farming. Tree planting and environmental education are also part of the conservation work.

The foundation also supports Batwa communities through education and livelihood programmes. These activities connect the lodge with communities living around Bwindi.

How to access Nkuringo Gorilla lodge

Nkuringo Gorilla lodge

Nkuringo is reached by road through southwestern Uganda. The route normally passes through Kabale and Kisoro before continuing towards the Nkuringo area. The final section is mountainous and winding. Travellers arriving through Kisoro Airstrip need a road transfer to the lodge. Because of the terrain, it is better to allow extra travel time rather than judging the journey by distance alone.
