Kyaninga Lodge is a luxury lodge near Fort Portal and Kibale National Park. The lodge sits beside Lake Kyaninga, a volcanic crater lake with views towards the Rwenzori Mountains. The lodge uses locally sourced materials and operates largely on solar power. Kibale National Park is about an hour from the lodge. Although it is not inside Kibale National Park, it provides access to Kibale and other attractions in western Uganda.
Accommodation

Kyaninga Lodge has 9 luxury cottages. The cottages stand separately on raised platforms. Wooden walkways connect them to the main lodge. Each cottage has a private deck facing the lake and surrounding landscape. Bathrooms include freestanding claw-foot baths and glass showers. The cottages also use solar power. The design uses locally sourced timber and other natural materials.
Facilities and dining

The main lodge contains the restaurant, bar and lounge. Breakfast and lunch can be served indoors or on the outdoor terraces. The kitchen uses produce from the lodge’s garden and nearby markets. The menu includes both local and international dishes. Special diets can be arranged with prior notice. The lodge also has a swimming pool and wellness centre. Spa services include massages, facials, reflexology, manicures and pedicures.
Activities offered by Kyaninga Lodge
Chimpanzee trekking
Guests can travel to Kibale National Park for chimpanzee trekking. The trek starts at the park’s visitor centre after registration and briefing. Visitors then walk through the forest with ranger guides while searching for chimpanzees. Kibale also supports other primates, so the walk can include sightings of monkeys and forest birds.
Crater rim walk
A guided walk can follow the rim of Lake Kyaninga. The walk takes around one and a half hours, according to the lodge. The trail provides views of the crater lake, surrounding hills and Rwenzori Mountains.
Forest walk
Visitors can also walk into the forest around the crater. The route is more demanding than the crater rim walk. It provides opportunities to see monkeys, birds, plants and other forest life.
Swimming in Lake Kyaninga
Lake Kyaninga provides an option for swimming. The lodge states that the lake is free of bilharzia and suitable for swimming. Visitors should still follow the lodge’s current safety advice before entering the water. Kayaks and paddleboards are available on request.
Semuliki National Park
Kyaninga can also serve as a base for visiting Semuliki National Park. The park is known for its Sempaya hot springs and lowland forest. The lodge estimates the drive to Semuliki at about one and a half hours.
Rwenzori activities
The lodge can also arrange trips towards the Rwenzori Mountains. Activities can range from short forest walks to longer mountain excursions. The route and difficulty depend on the chosen trail.
Community and conservation

Kyaninga has a strong social and environmental programme. The lodge supports the Kyaninga Child Development Centre which provides therapy, education and support for children with disabilities. Kyaninga Mobility also produces locally made bamboo wheelchairs and other mobility equipment.
The Kyaninga Forest Foundation focuses on reforestation. The foundation reports planting more than 40,000 indigenous trees around the area. The lodge also uses solar power and locally sourced building materials.
How to access Kyaninga lodge
Kyaninga Lodge is reached by road from Fort Portal. From Kampala or Entebbe, the journey normally takes around 5–6 hours, depending on traffic and stops. Travelers heading to Kibale can continue from Fort Portal towards the park. The final approach to Kyaninga includes a climb towards the crater area.
