Four Gorillas Lodge is located in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. The lodge is about 6 kilometres from the Rushaga gorilla trekking briefing point. The property sits near the forest edge with the surrounding landscape made up of forested hills, cultivated land and small communities. The lodge suits travellers whose main reason for visiting the area is gorilla trekking in Rushaga. It also works for visitors who want to combine gorilla trekking with visits to Lake Bunyonyi, Lake Mutanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Accommodation

Four Gorillas Lodge has 8 en-suite cottages. The cottages are arranged for different types of travellers, including single visitors, couples, families and small groups. The cottages have private bathrooms and sitting areas. Some also have balconies or outdoor spaces where guests can view the surrounding forest and hills. The lodge’s accommodation is designed around individual cottages rather than a large hotel building. This gives guests separate living spaces while keeping them close to the forest environment.
Facilities and dining
The lodge has a restaurant serving both Ugandan and international dishes. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be provided as part of the lodge’s full-board arrangements. Drinks and beverages are normally handled separately. Other facilities include Wi-Fi, a bar, outdoor sitting areas, parking, laundry services and a craft shop. Guests preparing for gorilla trekking can also arrange transfers to the Rushaga briefing point through the lodge.
Activities offered by Four Gorillas Lodge
Gorilla trekking
Gorilla trekking is the main activity for most visitors. Guests leave the lodge early and travel to the Rushaga briefing point. Rangers provide a briefing before visitors are allocated to a gorilla family. The trek then continues on foot through Bwindi’s forest. The time spent walking depends on where the gorillas are located. Once the group is found, visitors follow the ranger’s instructions while observing the gorillas from the required distance. The lodge can help guests arrange transfers to the trekking centre but the actual trek is conducted by the park authorities and their guides.
Gorilla habituation experience
The Rushaga sector is also associated with the gorilla habituation experience. This activity involves spending more time with a gorilla group undergoing habituation. Visitors accompany researchers and trackers as they observe the gorillas. Unlike standard trekking, habituation provides a longer period with the gorilla group. It requires a separate permit and advance arrangements.
Guided forest walks
Forest walks take visitors along established trails around Bwindi. A local guide explains plants, birds, insects and other features of the forest. The walks can be shorter than a gorilla trek and can therefore fit into an afternoon programme.
Bird watching at Four Gorillas lodge
Birding can be done around the forest and nearby vegetation. A guide helps visitors identify birds by their calls, colours and behaviour. Early morning is usually suitable because many forest birds are active at that time. Some of the birds that can be spotted include Red-collared Babbler, Blue-headed Sunbird & Regal Sunbird, Strange Weaver, Rwenzori Batis, Bar-tailed Trogon, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, White-tailed Blue Flycatcher and Olive Thrush
Batwa cultural visits
Four Gorillas lodge can arrange visits involving Batwa communities. These visits provide an opportunity to learn about traditional forest knowledge, medicinal plants, crafts, music and aspects of Batwa history. The experience takes place within communities rather than inside the gorilla trekking area.
Basket weaving and craft making
Visitors can meet local craft makers and see how baskets and other handmade products are produced. Guests may watch the process and, depending on the arrangement, take part in simple stages of the activity.
Lake Bunyonyi boat trips
The lodge can also arrange trips to Lake Bunyonyi. A boat or canoe takes visitors across the lake between its islands. The trip provides views of the surrounding hills, gardens and lakeside communities.
Community and conservation
Four Gorillas Lodge links its guest activities with communities around Bwindi. Community visits allow travellers to spend money directly on locally made crafts and services. The lodge also promotes forest-based tourism because gorilla trekking and other activities depend on the continued protection of Bwindi.
Getting there at Four Gorillas Lodge
From Kampala or Entebbe, the road journey to Rushaga takes roughly 8–9 hours depending on stops and road conditions. Travellers can also fly to Kisoro Airstrip and continue by road. The transfer from the airstrip to the lodge takes around two hours. The final section involves hilly roads, so travel times can vary.
