Activities offered by Bakiga Lodge
Gorilla trekking
Bakiga lodge is close to the Ruhija trekking centre. Guests normally leave early in the morning for the briefing. After registration, rangers allocate them to a habituated gorilla family. The trek takes place through Bwindi’s forest and can involve steep climbs. The lodge’s role is mainly to provide accommodation and help with arrangements. The actual trekking is managed by the park authorities.
Bird watching
Ruhija is a good area for forest birding. Birding trips usually start early, when birds are active. A guide leads visitors along forest trails and helps identify species by sight and sound. Bird watching can be combined with a forest walk. Some of the birds that can be spotted include Black Bee-eater, Bar-tailed Trogon, Blue-headed Sunbird, Purple-breasted Sunbird, Red-chested Flufftail, Archer’s Robin-Chat, Strange Weaver among others.
Guided forest hikes
The lodge can arrange guided hikes around the Bwindi area. The guide explains vegetation, birds and other forest features while visitors follow established routes. The length and difficulty depend on the chosen trail.
Craft market visits

Guests can visit local craft sellers around Ruhija. The activity provides an opportunity to see handmade baskets, mats and other products. Visitors can also learn about the materials used and how the products are made.
Community and conservation
Community development is central to Bakiga Lodge. The lodge is linked to the Bakiga Community Project which supports water projects in southwestern Uganda. The project constructs and repairs community springs and rainwater tanks. This work addresses a practical need in villages where people may otherwise travel long distances to collect water. The lodge also uses solar power and rainwater collection as part of its environmental practices.
