Detailed itinerary of the 5 Days Uganda Gorilla Safari
Day 1: Kibale National Park
From Kampala to Kibale is 358km and 7hr drive. Drive early from Kampala city heading west past Mityana and continue to Fort Portal where you will stop for lunch. Catch a glimpse of the Toro Kingdom palace, the Royal tombs the mosque as you head to Kibale. Upon arrival, you will check in at your lodge. Kibale national park has the highest concentration of primates in East Africa including chimps, black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and baboons. Go for an afternoon primate walk to Kanyanchu river camp, the most popular walk in the park. It highlights a miscellany of flora and fauna within the forest. Return to Ndali Lodge/Primates Lodge.
Day 2: Chimp Tracking
After breakfast, head straight Kanyanchu park headquarters to track chimpanzees. This can take you half a day. Besides, chimpanzees other primates you may encounter in the forest include the golden monkey, L’Hoest monkey, baboons, white and black colobus monkeys, grey checked mangabey, red colobus, blue monkeys, pottos, among others. Other animals in the park include forest elephants, giant forest hogs and a striking tree species. Later take a guided nature walk to Bigodi swamp sanctuary, a good site for bird viewing. The Great Blue Turaco and Papyrus Gonolek can easily be earmarked among the other 137 species. There is also an array of butterfly species. Return to your lodge for overnight stay.
Day 3: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Connect from Kibale to Bwindi impenetrable national for a gorilla trekking encounter the following day. The park protects almost half of the world population of the endangered mountain gorillas. Currently, there are 21 habituated gorilla families in Bwindi that are visited by tourists everyday.
Day 4: Mountain Gorilla Tracking.
Take an early breakfast and then head to the park headquarters for briefing about the gorilla trekking exercise. Head into the forest in search for your assigned gorilla group for tracking. You may take between 1-4 hours before meeting the gorillas depending on the movement of your assigned gorilla group. You are permitted to spend up to an hour in the presence of gorillas as you observe how they feed, play and rest. Head back to your lodge after the encounter with the gorillas. You may also go for a cultural experience in the Batwa community near the park.
Day 5: Lake Mburo
From Bwindi, proceed to Lake Mburo national park for a relaxing and amazing game drive experience. Check out the beautiful Kigezi highlands and other wild scenery on your way. Common species to be encountered in the park include zebra, warthog, buffalo, klipspringer, eland, oribi and waterbuck. Others include hippos, crocodiles and buffaloes. There are attractive birds to check out like Abyssinian ground hornbill, the crested crane (Uganda’s national emblem), saddle bill storks among others. Afterwards drive back to Kampala.
