While speaking at the launch of a two-day conference on Sustainable Development in Developing Countries (ICST – DC), in Dar es Salaam, the Tanzanian minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Mr. Lazaro Nyalandu urged international researchers, academicians and policy makers to come up with best practices and suggestions on strengthening peace and security for sustainable tourism development in Tanzania.
He noted that safety and security issues in the country are vital and that it is every citizen’s responsibility to stand as a watch man of each other. He used Kenya’s example of recent bombings to be an eye opener for all nations to wake up and stand guard to ensure safety and security of their citizens.
Mr. Nyalandu urged academicians and researchers to come up with constructive strategies that will create opportunities to develop the tourism industry as well as recommendations on how to avert the rampant poaching in most African countries.
While speaking at the same conference, the High Commissioner of Tanzania in Uganda, Dr Ladislaus Komba noted that tourism is one of the top three sources of export earnings for most of the developing countries, hence one of the most effective ways to lift people over poverty datum line by empowering and involving local communities. He used an example of Tanzania where tourism accounts for 17.2% of the GDP and generates nearly 28 per cent of her export earnings. He further noted that the sector’s performance even surpassed that of Agriculture.
Dr Komba highlighted Poaching to be one of the biggest challenges in the wildlife dependent tourist destinations in the country and expressed worry about their failure to calm it down. He however expressed hope that the conference would come up with solutions to eliminate this problem and help in promoting sustainable tourism in the country.
Dr Issack Shimba, the Head of Marketing Department at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDBS), observed that maintaining peace, security and safety in a country is pivotal in the development of its Tourism. He observed that investors will only invest in a country where they are assured of safety.
