Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

The park is found in southwestern Uganda, covering parts of Rukungiri, Kisoro, Kibale, Kanungu and Kabale Districts.

Background:  The word “Bwindi” is directly translated as impenetrable derived from a legend dark place. The forest was first gazetted in 1932 and given its current official name in 1991. It is located in a hilly countryside that, together with some remnant lowland forest outside the boundary constitutes an important water catchments area for many rivers, supply the agricultural land of the surrounding region.

Highlights: Uganda is synonymous with gorilla tracking in particular Bwindi forest. There are four gorilla groups namely Mubare (10 gorillas, 1 silverback), Rushegura “R” group with (10 gorillas, 1 silverback, Habinyanja “H” group (18 gorillas, 1 silverbacks) while  Nkuringo “N”group has (19 gorillas, 2 silverbacks). Gorillas are the main tourist attraction in the park. Half of the world’s gorilla population lives in Bwindi estimated 280-320 individuals living in 15 troops. There are also other primates such as black and white colobus monkey, Chimpanzees, red-tailed monkey, L’Hoest,  blue monkey and olive baboons. There are also rodents, bats, six antelope types including bushbuck, plus a remarkable 350 bird species mostly those endemic to the Albertine rift and not forgetting at least 200 butterfly species.

Vegetation: Bwindi has some of the richest population of fauna and flora including large numbers of trees. The park's forests are afro montane, which is a rare vegetation type on the African continent.  The park has more than 220 tree species, (more than 50% of Uganda's tree species) and more than 100 fern species. The Brown Mahogany is a threatened plant species found within the park.
